Established Public-Friendly culture.
For the first time in the history of Pakistan and probably in the subcontinent, the Motorway Police emerged as an entirely new policing culture based on service oriented and friendly policing. The previous image of the police as “Persecutors” was transformed into “Protectors”.

Title:
Reduction in traveling time.
There was an environment which was completely hostile to the smooth flow of traffic. All sorts of nuisance including lack of road sense, road infrastructure, road furniture, encroachments etc. existed. Resultantly the chaotic traffic culture was seen everywhere causing wastage of time and fuel due to congestions and traffic blockades which was also a source of frustration amongst the drivers provoking them to commit traffic violations and indulge in altercations with the law enforcing persons frequently.

Traffic awareness.
A culture of imparting education regarding road safety and traffic rules awareness was introduced under which a comprehensive and well rehearsed road safety campaign was launched before checking traffic violations and imposing penalties. Both print and electronic media were used to educate the general public and to reach the common man living along side the roads in small village/towns through specially established Mobile Education Units (MEU). This resulted into a tremendous success that the maximum number of road users, particularly public service vehicle drivers, responded and started behaving in a disciplined manner.

Helps – 3000 helps per day.
The NH&MP has introduced a new dimension of extending helps to the road users in distress which is a new element particularly in the policing culture of Pakistan.

Decrease in accidents – 70% Fatal and Non-Fatal.
Due to effective enforcement, there is a constant check on violations. Resultantly, due to traffic discipline and awareness about traffic rules, the NH&MP has been able to reduce the accident rate by 70%.

Reduction in Highway Crime – 80%.
Due to effective coordination with local law enforcement agencies and round the clock patrolling, implementing effective enforcement strategies by creating Special Emergency Squads and by video filming the passengers on all entry points of National Highways and Motorways, NH&MP has been able to bring about a remarkable decrease in highway crimes in all areas of its jurisdiction.

Establishment of Helpline – “130”
In order to provide quick response NH&MP has established its Helpline 130. Initially people could not get connected easily. The service was not available from all mobile networks and at some places area codes had to be dialed. After a series of meetings with PTCL, NTC, Mobile Companies, etc. now Help Line 130 can be dialed from any network. The road users can now contact NH&MP through any telephone service for helpThe Helpline has helped the commuters in a great way as they are attended by NH&MP in quick time. In order to further improve the response time to 130 calls a proposal for designing dedicated software is under consideration which would help in locating the exact position of the caller.

Facilitation of Economic Activities –
The round the clock presence on N-5 (Peshawar – Karachi Highway) has developed a sense of security amongst the business community. In the southern part, the industrial activities have been revived in the Nooriabad Industrial Estate which was almost closed for the last 10 years. More than 80 industrial units have become functional and some more units are coming up. This has also boosted up the confidence of the local and foreign investors. Besides, a number of small scale business units are functioning all along N-5.

Improvement in road condition.
For quality policing of the highest standards, a proper road infrastructure is needed. With the emergence of Motorway Police, the road infrastructure and road furniture were brought to the international standards. This has made the authorities as well as the commuters conscious about the standards of road network. Now, the authorities were morally bound to raise the standards of other roads as well. Thus, a general improvement in both federal and provincial highways is visible.

Lost and Found – Children, Baggage.
NH&MP has taken the responsibility of sacred duties of reuniting lost children with their legal heirs they found on the Highway and Motorways. many children of various ages have been reunited with their legal heirs.

Participated in Polio Eradication Campaign
Ministry of Health in collaboration with UNICEF and WHO launched a National Polio Immunization campaign from 6-8 May 2008. As a significant number of children are missed while they are in transit therefore NH&MP, in the national interest, extended its full cooperation to ensure that no child under the age of 5 should miss the polio drops while in transit. Therefore it was ensured that children are given polio drops at all toll plazas on the Motorways and Highways. During the three days campaign as many children were given polio drops.

On N-5 and Motorways except for informatory signboards there was no other mode available for the commuters/road users to seek guidance. Auto Workshops
NH&MP has established fully equipped auto workshops at Gujranwala, Jehlum and Kamra These workshops not only maintain patrol vehicles to their optimal fit condition but also provide help to other road users to fix faults of their vehicles.

Nomination of Magistrates
NH&MP check violations and prosecutes accordingly.vFor those violators who wanted to contest NH&MP action in the court had no idea in which court they should appear. NH&MP has got nominated magistrates all along the highways and motorways. Each patrol vehicle carries the list of such magistrates and guides the violators accordingly.
